Great Packing List for Iceland with a Toddler

If you’re here to read this Great Packing List for Iceland with a Toddler, I’m assuming you’re taking your toddler to Iceland. YAY. It is such an awesome international trip with a kiddo, and I’m so glad you’re doing it. We took our almost (1 week away) 2 year old to Iceland in July and had the best time. I am going to include everything we brought, what I don’t think you need, and what I wish we had brought. I know packing for a trip with a kiddo is stressful. Luckily, this Packing List for Iceland with a Toddler is all you need.

Tips for your Packing List for Iceland with a Toddler

  • Try to bring only what you’ll use. The less you have to worry about while in the airport, going through customs, etc., the better. Toddlers can make everything difficult, so don’t make your life more difficult by overpacking.
  • Be prepared for unpredictable Iceland weather. Bring layers, and have options to bundle up your toddler. Don’t miss out on cool outdoors things because you don’t have the right clothing.
  • Figure out how many suitcases you can bring and the cost based on the airline you’re flying.
  • Go through your suitcase(s) 2-3 times. Eliminate things you won’t need.
  • Plan to do laundry during your trip if you’re going to be there for more than 5 days. A lot of Airbnbs offer laundry services.
  • Make an actual list – either on your phone, a paper one, or print my downloadable list at the bottom of this post – and check off things as you pack them.
  • Don’t plan to buy much in Iceland. Clothes, diapers, and food items are more expensive in Iceland. If you have space in your suitcase, pack what you can.
  • Avoid bringing a pack n play. All of our accommodations had pack n plays available, and it was a huge item for us to not have to bring. If portable cribs are not listed, call the hotel, and they might have them.
  • Rent a wifi device. It’s easier than bringing/renting a GPS. You can pick up/drop off at the airport.
  • Do you need a converter/adapter? Yes. Iceland uses different voltages and has different outlets. We used this one from amazon. Keep in mind how many things you need to plug in – cell phones, white noise machine, baby monitor, etc.

My husband and I flew Icelandair with our almost 2 year old. We purposely took her on her first international trip right before she turned 2 because she still counted as a lap child. Her flight was around $100 instead of $700. We paid for 2 checked bags for my husband and me. An Economy lap child gets a free checked bag, so we checked a hiking carrier. A stroller and car seat are always included in your ticket.

I’ll go through all the items and include a printable list at the end.

Packing List for Iceland with a Toddler:

Clothes:

  • Long sleeve shirts
  • T-Shirts
  • Pants
  • Socks
  • Jacket &/or sweatshirt
  • Shoes – 2 pairs, one of which should be a good pair of tennis shoes/sneakers
  • Waterproof hiking boots for the grown ups
  • Sun hat
  • Bathing suit. You NEED to go to an Icelandic swimming pool.
  • Rain suit for your toddler. This thing is just awesome, and you never know what the weather is going to be like in Iceland.
  • Rain pants for the grown ups
  • Hat or beanie. Yes, even if it’s summer.
  • Mittens if it’s winter
  • Snow clothes and boots if it’s winter

Food:

  • Plate
  • Utensils
  • Cups, especially if you use special ones with your toddler
  • Snacks that your toddler loves
  • Instant food. We brought a couple mac n cheese cups, which came in handy when we needed a quick meal for our kiddo.
  • Ziplocs! We cooked at some of our airbnbs and didn’t have the best way to transport leftovers. Ziplocs would have been helpful to pack up food. You can also make ice packs with them.

Sleep:

  • Pack n Play sheet. Our accommodations already had sheets on their pack n plays, but you never know if a toddler will dirty their sheet. It’s worth it to have an extra.
  • White noise machine. Especially if you’ll be sleeping in the same room as your kiddo.
  • Any lovies or stuffed animals or blankets they normally sleep with
  • Slumber pod. Especially if you’re going in the summer with the Midnight Sun. This thing is amazing. It’s a breathable tent that fits over pack n plays. It keeps the light out. We have used it since our kiddo was months-old, but it was especially handy in July in Iceland.
  • Eye mask for the adults

Bathroom:

  • Diapers. We did buy some in Iceland, but pack them if you have space.
  • Baby wipes
  • If your toddler is potty-trained, bring a travel potty.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Washcloths
  • Aquaphor or diaper cream
  • Adult toiletries

Toddler-specific items:

  • Car seat. We bought a Cosco car seat prior to the trip, and it worked out well. You can rent car seats through the car rental companies if you prefer.
  • Toys. Small toys that will occupy your kiddo. We brought a couple plastic animals, play doh, coloring books, stickers, a toddler tablet, and a coloring board.
  • Books. Only bring a couple.
  • Swim diapers
  • Thermometer

Miscellaneous:

  • A ziploc of powdered laundry detergent for when you do laundry.
  • PASSPORTS. Yes, you need a passport for your little one. And passports must be valid for 3 months from your return date for Iceland.
  • Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen. Just in case.
  • Sunscreen
  • Towels. If you visit a pool, it’s best to have your own towels, otherwise you have to pay to rent them.
  • Any medications your little one usually takes
  • Converters
  • Chargers
  • First aid kit

Optional Items

  • Hiking carrier. This was helpful at some of the more dangerous outdoor spots.
  • Baby monitor. We did use ours. We had an airbnb with a hot tub, and we used the monitor outside while our toddler slept.
  • High chair. All of our accommodations except one included a high chair. We brought a travel eating seat, but we didn’t use it enough for it to have been worth it.
  • Stroller. You can check one for free. We didn’t use ours a ton, but it was helpful at times.

What to pack in your carry-ons for the plane:

  • Pajamas and/or extra set of clothes
  • Toys (tablet with loaded videos/games, play doh, reusable sticker book, literally anything that will occupy your child for a long flight. *New* toys are a great idea.)
  • Regular headphones and toddler headphones
  • SNACKS. All the snacks. For you and your kiddo.
  • Water bottle
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Anything that your toddler normally sleeps with. If you have a red-eye flight, bring their lovey, blanket, etc.
