Ozone Falls

2 hours from Nashville

Short Hike

Ozone Falls requires a very long drive for a very short hike. While these falls don’t rank as high on MY list because of the lack of hiking to get to them, they are extraordinary to see.

Getting there

The address is 14563 TN-1, Rockwood, TN 37854.

Buckle up for a long drive from Nashville. Grab some coffee, bring your dog to keep you company (everyone converses with their pets on long drives, right?), and find some good music. A 2 hour drive will get you to a little parking lot right off the road. Because you are so close to the main road, be careful with kids and the dog that just listened to your boy issues and stresses at work.

The short hikes

Getting to Ozone Falls is self-explanatory once you arrive. You can walk to the top of the falls in one minute on flat ground, which is nice for the less-mobile. The falls are 110 feet tall. There is not a fence or any way to keep you from the edge, so, again, be cautious if you have kids and dogs with you.

I would not have felt this waterfall to be worth it if I had not made my way down to the bottom of the falls. Follow a little path along the road and then climb your way down. It was not that difficult for me or my boxer. And the falls are picturesque from the bottom. It’s 3/4 mile roundtrip.

Apparently, scenes from The Jungle Book were filmed at Ozone Falls in 1994. I have no idea if this is actually true, but it seems cool. And I imagined Mowgli (the cartoon version who I used to have a huge crush on) while I was looking at them. The pool is a light blue color and the mist is beautiful. I’d imagine you can swim in the summer, but it was too cold when I was there.

There were only 5 other people when I was there on a Thursday. A man set up his yoga mat on a little rock overlook. If you’re into that, go for it. 🙂

Advice for Ozone Falls

I would recommend going in the later afternoon so the sun hits the water just right. Pack a lunch, find a rock, and enjoy the view.

If you want to pack 2 waterfalls into one day and get some hiking in, you should stop at Cummins Falls on the way back to Nashville. For a comprehensive list of the best waterfall hikes near Nashville, click here.

This spot also provides the perfect lighting for your dog photos 🙂 YES I realize this isn’t a waterfall photo, but how cute is she?
